Digital innovation in the NHS - clinician confidence is key

Oliver Westmancott was interviewed at HIMSS about digital services transformation in the NHS.

We launched IE GDS at the HIMSS Executive Leadership Summit on Thursday, where we were Gold sponsors. Our Digital Strategy Director Oliver Westmancott led a short session on the programme where he spoke about “Clinician confidence: Neglected key to the successful adoption of emerging healthcare technologies”. Our ongoing work with Public Health England (PHE), NHS Digital/HSCIC and National Information Board, seeks to boost the confidence of clinicians to recommend digital health apps and technologies to patients, through an NHS 'kitemarking' system for approved apps.

Digital services that improve the current patient experience will drive adoption of new technology and reduce costs. This will benefit the NHS by allowing more investment and transformation.
For real cultural change it's vital to get buy-in from clinicians. Healthcare professionals need the confidence to recommend new technologies, and the library of health apps we are building with PHE and NIB will give them this confidence and drive adoption.
For the NHS to become truly paperless by 2020, everyone needs to pull in the same direction. Evolutionary change is happening, but time and money are needed to achieve real transformation.
From what we heard at the Executive Leadership Summit, there's plenty of innovation and - in parts of the NHS at least - there are big changes happening, and quickly.
